How It's Calculated
Air: the chargeable weight is the greater of the actual weight (weight × quantity) and the volumetric weight (length × width × height in cm ÷ 6,000, × quantity); cost = chargeable weight × your rate per kg. Sea: total CBM (length × width × height in cm ÷ 1,000,000, × quantity) × your rate per CBM.
Real Example
Example: 10 cartons of 60×40×40 cm at 20 kg each. By air at $5/kg — actual weight 200 kg, volumetric weight 160 kg, so the chargeable weight is 200 kg and the cost is $1,000. By sea at $60/CBM — total volume 0.96 CBM, so the cost is $57.60.
Notes & Limitations
Enter the all-in rate your forwarder quotes: per kg for air, per CBM for sea. Results cover freight only — origin and destination charges, customs duty, insurance and surcharges are extra. The air formula uses the IATA-standard 6,000 divisor (many express couriers use 5,000, so check your carrier). LCL sea freight is often billed on whichever is greater of CBM or tonnes; this tool bills on volume only.
