Standby Letter of Credit (SBLC)
A bank guarantee that only becomes payable if the buyer fails to fulfil their payment obligation — used as a backup, unlike a commercial letter of credit which is the primary payment method.
Example
A seller on open account terms may ask for a standby letter of credit as protection in case the buyer defaults.
